2024 Ball

Our Student Life

We want to make sure your first year at UC rocks! Check out the ways we support you to make your student life great below:

Events & Activities

There is always something happening at Arcady!

Right from O-Week, where we have a jam-packed social calendar to help our residents settle in and get to know eachother, our events are designed to help bring our Arcady Community together and make everyone feel at home, whilst having heaps of fun!

From themed parties like Casino Night and Barn Dance to formal events like the annual ball and awards night to low-key events like sports competitions and arts and crafts - there is something for everyone at Arcady!

Our events programme is based on our 4 pillar approach (Life, Learn, Connect and Support). This helps to ensure our events are well-rounded and catering to a diverse group of students.

Learner Voice

We have several methods in place for our students voices to be heard including:

  • Student Council:

    • Each year, students have the opportunity to nominate themselves for our Student Council which is then selected by our Senior Management. This council then plays a pivotal role within our Arcady Community.

    • The Council meet weekly with Senior Management to provide feedback on Hall policies, run social events and ultimately help us create an engaged community.

  • Residential Assistant (RA) Floor Group Meetings:

    • Our RAs meet informally with their ‘floor group’ each month to inform them of any current events, provide helpful hints and reminders.

    • During the meeting, residents can discuss any issues they would like them to raise to the staff. Residents are, of course, always welcome to talk to the RAs whenever necessary.

  • Residential Surveys:

    • Residents are given surveys to complete after arrival and again prior to exiting Arcady Hall. This provides an opportunity for residents to provide anonymous feedback about their experience of our facilities, academic and pastoral support, and catering, as well as the Arcady Hall staff team.

    • Staff collects this information and uses it to make improvements throughout the hall where needed.

  • Suggestion Box:

    • Residents are welcome to pop a note into the Suggestion Box on ideas to improve their experience at the hall at any time.

    • These ideas are discussed during the Student Council meeting to find ways to implement them.

Academic Support

At Arcady Hall we want to support you to thrive in all areas of your life, including academically.

To ensure you start University with your best foot forward, we run weekly tutorials where the tutors come in & answer any of your questions, facilitate discussions, and help you with upcoming assignments and tests. During exams we increase our tutorials to provide dedicated time to give you more confidence to head into your exams. Plus, alot of our tutors are ex-Arcadians so it's nice to have them back!

We also run Study Skills Sessions throughout the year to help set you up with APA referencing, planning your study, and help you to navigate how to thrive in the learning environment of University.

Our Study Center is a great space for people to study and has a divider so that at times it may be sectioned off to allow for one half of the room to be dedicated to silent study (particularly during study break before exams). It also includes a Whiteboard Wall, 3 UC Computers and a printer on the UC network.

Support & Wellbeing

We care about the safety and well-being of each individual who lives at Arcady. We want to know when things are going well and when they are not. If you find that you are struggling, we are here to help you. We can offer a listening ear over coffee, and/or refer you to the relevant UC student support service, depending on the issue.

UC has an array of student support services available including the Academic Skills Centre, the Student Services Hub (Te Pātaka) and Student Advisors (Kaitoko) for study-related issues. Additionally, UC Student Care, the UC Health Centre and UC Counsellors, the Rainbow Advisor, and the UC Māori and Pasifika teams are available to help with other matters.
